Teach For America alum Samantha Slim (South Louisiana ’11) teaches a group of inquisitive third graders that are always on the hunt for knowledge.

“They come from backgrounds that are often challenging and overwhelming,” Ms. Slim says of her students from Rosenwald Elementary School in New Roads, Louisiana. “However, each day they are looking forward to learning and exploring.”

Her students enjoy sitting on the floor together as a group to work out math problems on the Smart Board and love hearing their teacher read folktales and books about the ocean, Ms. Slim says. They also gather on the floor to watch class movies or group presentations, even though there’s not a comfy carpet for them to sit on to protect them from the cold, hard floor.

“’Ok, everyone! Let’s all move to the carpet! Oh, I mean the floor,’” Ms. Slim will say. “That’s when my third graders laugh and say, ‘Ms. S., when are we gonna get a rug? We love to gather together, but the floor is just so cold!’”

Because Ms. Slim wants her students to have a nice place to sit and have the best learning materials possible, she has turned to DonorsChoose.org to raise funds to purchase a carpet for her classroom with a colorful world map print. With a new carpet her students will be able to work together and collaborate with one another while learning about the world.

Please consider supporting Ms. Slim’s project today—and thank you, as always for supporting teachers and the kids they serve.
