Teach For America alum Samantha Marquez (Houston ’14) believes her students at YES Prep West in Houston are redefining what is possible when it comes to reading.
“Many come from low-income families and struggle with a variety of issues before they even walk into the classroom,” Ms. Marquez says. “As a reading intervention teacher and the school’s librarian, I’ve seen all of our students embrace a whatever-it-takes attitude to ensure their personal literary growth.”
Ms. Marquez has set her sights on making each student a life-long lover of reading, and aims to provide books that her kids will find interesting and leave them wanting more. She also understands that when it comes to instilling a joy of reading in her students, variety and access to a lot of books are key.
To expand her library, Ms. Marquez has turned to DonorsChoose.org to raise funds to purchase more young adult books for her students to read at school and at home. With titles and YA series like The Maze Runner and The Lunar Chronicles, Ms. Marquez hopes to sustain her students’ momentum and help them truly fall in love with reading.
