Start Today: Boost Independent Reading

In honor of Read Across America Week, take some time to share the joy of reading with your students this week.  Not only is independent reading one of the most effective ways to increase your students’ reading ability, but it’s a way for students to learn about themselves, their values, and the world around them.

Check out the lesson plan ideas below for ideas about how to increase the volume and love of reading in your classroom!  It’s never too late to START NOW!

Increase Independent Reading With the Million Words Campaign

Sometimes a simple idea can make a big difference.

My experience watching my 5th grade students learn, grow, question, build confidence, and experience joy while reading has lead me to believe that reading can truly change lives. In my role on TFA’s national design team, I’m constantly looking for ways to improve how we support our elementary literacy teachers, and that’s how I came up with the idea to launch our own Million Words Campaign.
